A collection of ideas I had for new actions to use in combat.
New Combat Mechanic: Stances
The goal here is to add more flavor or personality to a character's fighting style beyond just what feats can provide.
Stances come in both offensive and defensive flavors. Each stance comes with benefits and downsides to make using them more tactical.
Using stances is simple; only one stance can be used at a time, and one turn is required to activate a stance. A stance can be deactivated at any time as a free action and a new stance can be primed to activate on the next turn as part of the same action. But during that period no benefits are provided from either stance. The default stance in combat is "Neutral". Neutral stance provides no benefits or penalties. A character cannot start in a stance; all combat begins in the neutral stance.
If these go through, I will probably add new feats to take advantage of them.
Note: Sniper might replace "Take Aim". If that happens, Sniper Rifles will gain +1 critical while in the Sniper Stance.
Defensive
Counter
Action Type: Stance
The pilot takes a defensive stance while they collect themselves for a counterattack. While using this stance the pilot may defend but not attack until a successful block or parry, after which their attack that turn gains an accuracy bonus equal to the pilot's Defense modifier. The attack must be a single strike or it will not receive the benefit.
Potential Feat:
Turtle
Action Type: Stance
The pilot focuses on defense over offense. While using the Turtle stance the pilot's Redirection, Interception, or Parry actions add the Reaction modifier as a bonus in addition to the Defense modifier. However, any attacks made while using this stance receives half the Melee or Range bonus applied to weapons instead of the full amount. Dual wielders receive no Melee or Range bonus to their weapons.
Offensive
Berserker
Action Type: Stance (Melee)
The character tosses aside all thoughts of defense and focuses entirely on offense. While using this stance the character's Defense modifier is added to melee attack accuracy, but no defensive actions can be used.
Potential Feat:
Berserker (Alternative)
Action Type: Stance (Melee)
The character tosses aside defense in favor of pure offense. While using this stance, all defensive actions suffer a -4 penalty but all melee attacks gain +2 accuracy in exchange.
Sniper
Action Type: Stance (Ranged)
The pilot focuses on ranged offense, sacrificing defense for improved shooting accuracy. While using the Sniper Stance, all single fire ranged attacks gain a bonus equal to the pilot's Defense modifier. In exchange all defensive actions have their modifiers reduced by half.
Sniper (Alternative)
Action Type: Stance (Ranged)
The pilot focuses on ranged offense, sacrificing defense and evasion for improved firing accuracy. While using this stance, all bonuses to Evasion Rating are converted into single fire ranged weapon accuracy. Additionally all defensive actions have their modifiers reduced by half.
