Age: 19
Gender: Male
Height: 5'4"
Specialization I: Swordsman
Specialization II: None
Specialization III: None
Evolution/Enhancement: Newtype - B
Credits: 1,115
Appearance:
James stands at about five feet, four inches with an average body frame. His eyes are dark brown and his hair is a lighter shade of brown cut to ear length. His face is marked by a vertical scar that extends across his left eye, an injury from falling debris when his village was attacked. The eye itself is undamaged. For clothing he usually wears a brown jacket with torn cuffs over a blue shirt and simple black pants.
After his rehabilitation, James took up up a daily exercise routine mostly consisting of jogging and some moderate weight lifting to keep himself fit and clear his head. In addition he's taken to studying hand to hand combat, sparring against others in his spare time. Though his actual fighting ability is average. The result is a fairly toned musculature and decent physical strength.
Despite his efforts to keep fit however, James refuses to sleep for very long, only allowing himself short naps and the occasional hour of sleep. When he does let his guard down and actually allow himself to rest, his dreams are twisted into nightmares. As a result he has a near eternally tired look upon his features. The only genuine sleep he finds is when sheer exhaustion takes him and he drops into a dreamless sleep until awoken. These narcoleptic instances are rare, random, and sudden, often coming without the slightest warning to either himself or those around him.
Personality:
On the surface, James is a friendly, focused, and loyal individual. If you earn his respect he'll back you up whenever you need it and he will go out of his way to help others, regardless of the task, believing that people have suffered enough. He's also a straight shooter, preferring to tell the truth over a lie.
Growing up, his village did not have many women his age, and thus James is fairly inexperienced when it comes to the opposite sex. While he can interact with them just fine on a regular basis, the prospect of relationships and flirting tend to catch him off guard. As a result, while for the most part he seems confident and easy going, pursuing or being pursued by women makes him anxious and nervous.
James is forgiving for the most part, if you wrong him unintentionally he will forgive you without hesitation. When someone wrongs him intentionally he will typically brush it off, knowing that pointless petty squabbles benefit no one. Those who do manage to push him over the edge find that his anger is fierce when provoked and will receive no mercy nor compassion from him when retaliating. Though James typically tries to avoid stepping on others feelings or achievements, he has a somewhat sarcastic sense of humor and can be quite blunt when annoyed or frustrated.
Furthermore, in a fight James does not pull his punches. He has no issue with using any and all means to achieve victory, even if those means are underhanded. He is driven by a fierce determination to protect others, especially those he sees as comrades. This protective urge is an extension of his survivor's guilt, born from the trauma of watching his home burn, completely powerless to do anything about it and it is strong enough to override his rationality and common sense at times. As a result, during a fight with lives on the line James becomes somewhat of a berserker, holding nothing back with single minded focus and acting with near reckless abandon.
At the same time, James has a strong sense of survivors guilt that combined with his will to live creates a contradiction that ultimately forms the core of his actions and personality. On the one hand he privately believes he should have died with his village. This guilt drives him to acts of recklessness, throwing himself into any challenge or danger placed in front of him and pushes him to take risks on the battlefield. At the same time James feels a deep responsibility towards the dead to see things through to the end and to ensure the world becomes a better place for all. This sense of responsibility is also a major drive in his will to live and was what led him to first claw his way out of the scorched wreckage of his home. Furthermore, James prefers to have a fair grasp of what he can and cannot do when approaching any given task. This helps restrain most of his recklessness to "in the moment" situations where action overrides thought.

History:
James was born in the small village of Valence to Vereesa and Mark Torian. Born into a farming family, Valen spent most of his youth tilling fields and tending to the animals. On slower days he would wistfully gaze up to the sky and dream of greater things. Shortly after Jame's eighteenth birthday, he got a taste of that greatness. In the course of a single night invaders from the skies wiped out his entire village. Initially trying to escape the carnage with his parents, one of the attackers struck a nearby building with an explosive weapon and wood and stonework rained down upon them, burying them in hot debris.
The next day James woke to find himself the sole survivor of the attack, the debris having concealed him from detection. Burned, bleeding, tired, and with shattered legs, James forced himself from the brink in the hopes of saving himself and finding someone else in the ruins, clawing his way out with his bare hands. Instead. he found only bodies and scorched fields. Heartbroken and unable to walk, James had nothing left to do but die like he should have. Fortunately, fate had other plans for him.
Scouts and scavengers from the mountains had descended to search the village ruins. They found a dehydrated and starved James lying against the foundation of a shattered home. Giving him food and water, the scavengers explained they had come from something called the resistance and had come seeking any survivors, having found none in the nearby hills or woods. Taking him back with them, James spent the remainder of the year recovering and grieving.
When his injuries were finally healed, James decided to join the resistance that had taken him in. Driven by a fierce will to keep others from suffering the same despair he had, James threw himself into the training to pilot a mobile suit. After passing basic qualifications, James became an official member of the resistance.
