Appearance
Standing at 5 feet, eight inches, James has changed since he first joined The Resistance. His hair has lightened from a dark brown to a lighter shade as a result of the changing seasons and his shoulders have broadened, giving him a more solid appearance. He still retains a athletic frame, though he has had less time to physically train himself.
For clothing he now prefers a simple grey shirt and a blue hoodie with black trim. Concealed beneath his clothing and located on his lower back is a brace designed to help with his physical condition by keeping his back and spine aligned. Thanks to successful regenerative treatments he no longer requires weekly injections and instead only needs the brace to function normally in daily life. Around his neck he wears a necklace adorned with a red metallic center. The necklace was fashioned from materiel collected from Valerie's Union Blast.
When deployed on missions James wears a blue with white trim pilot suit with a matching helmet. Like most pilot suits, the outfit is armored in key locations such as the chest, shoulders, and calves to protect the pilot should the cockpit become compromised or if the pilot is attacked outside of their mobile suit. James' suit was modified to accommodate his spinal brace.
After dealing with his survivor's guilt and coming to terms with the reality of battle, James is no longer plagued with nightmares and has finally been able to sleep. Consequently, he no longer looks perpetually exhausted. However he still bears shadows under his eyes because the increase in combat deployment means he has had less time to sleep. He's been making do with quick naps and short rests.
Personality
James has changed considerably since he joined The Resistance. He is still a hard working and fairly approachable individual who strives to be the neutral peace keeper among his more outburst-prone comrades. But just as often he finds himself butting heads with them. Though the core of his personality has remained the same, he has matured past some of his previous flaws and is working on coming to terms with the rest.
When he first joined, James was desperate to prove himself and take on the Death Army forces that had caused so much destruction. Often he took it to self destructive levels, throwing himself into every battle and never allowing himself time to rest as he sought any and all means of acquiring knowledge and power and shouldering far more responsibility on himself than he should have. After a year of active deployment, James has finally found his center in The Resistance as a leader and a soldier. He has become calmer, more relaxed in his stance, and more focused on the overall goal instead of focusing on the short term.
Over the course of his many battles, James has begun to develop a more tactical and strategic mindset. He's more comfortable with examining the enemy's tactics and numbers and coordinating his own allies to match their strengths or compensate for vulnerabilities. Combining this with his growing experience and confidence in his skills, he finds himself more often acting as a commander for ground forces during battle. In battle, James is quick to take charge of the situation and work to turn it to his advantage. While he often puts himself at the center of his tactics, usually positioning himself as the tip of the spear, he keeps the skills and abilities of his comrades in mind. Often he tries to keep the enemy's attention focused on himself, so that his allies can come in from behind and overwhelm them. Often times after battle, he goes over the combat data collected on the field and examines it for flaws or ways to improve.
Freed of his survivor's guilt thanks to the support of Valerie and Arthur, James is far more focused and less reckless in battle. He is less likely to charge straight into enemy lines and now considers a more tactical and less direct approach; attacking the enemy from the side or bombarding them from afar while he or his allies close the distance. James retains his ruthless streak in combat. If an enemy shows weakness or a vulnerability, he will exploit it and overwhelm them with either greater numbers or superior firepower. In the heat of battle he sometimes descends into a more brutal fighting style, taking down enemies with overwhelming force or in ways meant to intimidate.
Having experienced firsthand the destruction wrought by the Death Army, James' most fervent wish is to see humanity rise from its oppression and finally live free of fear and tyranny. He has dedicated himself entirely to the fight and it is for this reason that he continues to fight even when the odds seem impossible. But above even that, James has vowed to embrace life again and live. To achieve his dream and live in a peaceful world.

Relationships
- Valerie Hart: Though they clashed early on, Valerie's blunt if honest opinions and self confidence managed to earn James' respect. In turn, his refusal to judge her for her past softened Valerie's opinion of him and she found herself enjoying his company. Over time, Valerie ended up becoming a kind of confidante for him, hearing out his problems and offering support and insight. By the time of The Siege, the pair had become fairly close. Though Valerie often flustered James with her looks and flirtation, he never really considered a relationship with her until just before the final battle of The Siege where she asserted her affection with a kiss. This event exposed to James just how much she meant to him and after the battle the two have officially entered a relationship. James had a set of necklaces fashioned from their mobile suits made to signify it.
- Arthur Blaze: James initially took Arthur under his wing when the pilot proved himself dangerously reckless and inexperienced. Despite his flaws, he saw potential in the pilot and worked to draw it out, mentoring Arthur in mobile suit combat and battleground strategy. As a result they spent a lot of time together and James came to appreciate Arthur's honest enthusiasm and positivity. As one of the first people to actually believe in him, Arthur came to admire James as an esteemed comrade. The pair often work well together on and off of the battlefield.
